About NaOH Bar
The topic of mental health has always been close to my heart. I battled with anorexia in my late teens and experienced sexual violence in my adult life. Although the separate incidents seem unrelated, I’ve learned that many people who’ve experienced an ED are also victims of sexual assault. In my own experience, the common ground between these two incidents is that they can both be caused by and result in a lack of self-value, and a desire to regain a sense of control. I spent many years pretending to value myself. Although I considered therapy, I chose not to seek help due to self-denial, social stigma, long wait times, and high costs. Luckily, I was able to work through my issues with the help of family, friends, and my own determination. I realize that not everyone is as fortunate to have such a great support network, and that’s why I feel it’s important to have timely, equitable, and affordable resources.
Statistics show that 70% of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence. Evidence also shows that recovery (from a mental illness) is more successful with early intervention. That’s why I am supporting youth mental health with my products at NaOH Bar.
